Leaked specs Mavic 3 indicate mechanical shutter

DJI is anticipated to unveil the Mavic 3 later this autumn. According to Jasper Ellens' leaked specs, the Mavic 3 camera will feature both a mechanical and an electronic shutter.

Update: DJI Mavic 3 is expected to be released on October 20, 2021.

Leaked specs Mavic 3 indicate electronic and mechanical shutter

Previously, the DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 was the most popular and reasonably priced professional DJI drone with both an electronic and a mechanical shutter.

The P4P V2.0 features the following shutter speeds, according to its specifications:

  • 8-1/2000 s mechanical shutter speed
  • 8-1/8000 s Electronic Shutter Speed

The Advantages of a Mechanical Shutter

In nearly every case, the mechanical shutter removes the rolling shutter effect in aerial photography. This is why the P4P V2.0 has become very popular among professional drone pilots who use the DJI drone for mapping and 3D modeling, since the aerial pictures have less distortion, resulting in more accurate maps and models.

The mechanical shutter of the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 is only useful for photography. It cannot function at high rates of 24, 30, or 60 frames per second that are needed for video recording. An electronic global shutter would be required to fully remove the rolling shutter phenomenon during video recording.

The one camera from DJI that does offer a global mechanical shutter is the DJI Zenmuse P1 ($6,300), which has a central leaf shutter.

Leaked spec sheet of the Mavic 3

According to the spec sheet that was leaked a few days ago, the upcoming DJI Mavic 3 Pro will also have a mechanical shutter. Many professional drone pilots should be pleased about this since it will make the compact and foldable drone ideal for photogrammetry.

According to the leaked spec sheet of the Mavic 3, it features the following shutter speeds:

  • 8-1/2000 s mechanical shutter speed
  • 8-1/8000 s Electronic Shutter Speed

Itis noteworthy to point out that the mechanical shutter is only available on the wide-angle camera of the DJI Mavic 3.

Will the Mavic 3 end the Phantom lineup?

Will the addition of a mechanical shutter on the Mavic 3 render the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 obsolete? And does this imply that a DJI Phantom 5 is even less likely? We tend to believe so.
