Weather-Proof DJI M30 Drone Proves Crucial in Dramatic Rescue of Lost Mushroom Hunters in Washington
A weather-proof drone deployed by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office played a pivotal role in rescuing two mushroom hunters lost in Skamania County’s treacherous backcountry during harsh winter conditions on November 17, 2024, reports KOIN.
The rescue operation, which involved more than 50 volunteers and multiple K9 and search and rescue teams, faced challenging conditions including “hail, sleet, pouring rain and freezing nights” while searching for the missing foragers.

The breakthrough in the search came when the Clark County Sheriff’s Office deployed their all-weather drone equipped with advanced search capabilities. The unmanned aircraft successfully located one of the missing mushroom hunters from the air, enabling ground teams to coordinate a precise rescue operation.
“The drone team then relayed communication to those on the ground, leading them through difficult terrain until both mushroom hunters were found safe,” according to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office.
Pattern of Incidents
This rescue adds to a concerning pattern of mushroom hunter emergencies in the area. Within the past month alone, multiple foragers have required rescue from Skamania County’s forests. The incidents included a person trapped in blizzard-like conditions on October 30, followed by three separate rescues within 24 hours on October 27-28. Tragically, one person died before rescuers could reach them during this period.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office issued a public safety warning about seasonal hazards, emphasizing the importance of proper preparation. Their warning specifically addressed the dangerous combination of lowering temperatures, lower-altitude snow conditions, and decreased daylight hours during this time of year.
