Understanding DJI Geo Zones and Drone Flight Restrictions

Geofencing is a three-dimensional area that can restrict a drone from operating in or out of certain areas. DJI implements these as “Geo zones” – built into all their drones. While they can be tricky to navigate, Geo zones serve as an educational form of geofencing, ensuring operators understand their location and intended operation area.

Types of Geo Zones in the United States

DJI divides their Geo zones into two categories:

  1. Warning zones
  2. Enhanced warning zones

These zones appear as yellow polygons on the map, indicating airspace where flying is either prohibited or requires FAA approval. The app will identify the type of warning zone when selected.

Warning and enhanced warning zones are largely similar, with enhanced zones requiring additional verification that you accept responsibility for flying there.

Purpose and Implementation

Geo zones are designed to match FAA airspace restrictions around:

  • Airports
  • Military bases
  • Prisons
  • Temporary flight restrictions

If your Geo zone display differs from others, ensure your drone and DJI Fly Safe database are fully updated.

Operating in Geo Zones

The impact of Geo zones varies depending on your flight method:

  • When using a DJI controller, you’ll need to accept responsibility via checkbox
  • Drones flown without a controller or directly through the Fly app on mobile devices can take off without unlocking (typically sub-250g recreational drones)
  • This exception doesn’t apply when using a controller with a connected phone

When operating outside but near a DJI Geo zone with a controller, you may receive a warning that your aircraft’s behavior could change if you fly towards or into the zones. However, with warning and enhanced warning zones, Return to Home (RTH) and other flight behaviors remain unchanged.

Important Considerations

DJI will not prevent you from flying in FAA-restricted areas. Accepting responsibility means acknowledging that:

    • Manned aircraft may fly at very low altitudes
    • Aircraft may be landing at nearby airports
    • Always verify FAA restrictions before flying

DJI enhanced warning zones don’t have altitude restrictions, but the FAA likely limits the area’s altitude. Use apps like Air Control to verify flying heights.

The Geo zone unlock in your DJI app does not substitute for FAA airspace authorization.

      International Considerations

Geo zones outside the may completely prevent flight. Research local restrictions when traveling. For a complete list of Geo zones and their effects on flight behavior, consult the DJI FlySafe website.
