BayCare will build a drone delivery network with Zipline across Florida’s Tampa Bay region, with the first flights scheduled for late 2027. The partnership puts lab samples, medications, and critical supplies in the air between hospitals and straight to patients’ homes.

Service starts in the St. Petersburg-Clearwater area, then expands. It runs on the same Zipline Platform 2 aircraft DroneXL watched complete its first customer delivery back in January 2025.

Zipline’s drone hovers at 300 feet and drops orders on a tether

Here’s the mechanics: a BayCare provider loads an order into a Zipline Dropbox at a designated site, and the electric aircraft retrieves it and flies autonomously to the destination, whether that’s another facility or a patient’s backyard. The drone never lands at the delivery point.

It holds position up to 300 feet (91 m) in the air while a small pod, which Zipline calls a droid, lowers to the ground on a thin tether. The droid uses a downward camera and thrusters to steer itself into the drop zone, correcting for crosswind, then releases the order and reels back up.

The whole loop is contactless by design. Zipline built the order flow around privacy and patient choice, so a home delivery lands in the yard without a courier at the door, and a patient who would rather pick up at a facility can still do that.

Zipline rates the system to work in high winds and bad weather. That claim matters in a state that spends half the year under afternoon thunderstorms and the occasional hurricane watch, and it’s the difference between a network that runs on schedule and one that grounds itself every July.

BayCare will move lab samples and medications across 16 hospitals

BayCare is the largest not-for-profit academic health system in West Central Florida, running 16 hospitals including a children’s hospital and hundreds of smaller locations. The drone network targets the slow, expensive part of that footprint: shuttling lab specimens and prescriptions between sites and out to homes.

Stephanie Conners, BayCare’s president and CEO, framed it around speed and patient choice. “This new delivery option allows us to serve customers more quickly and reliably while giving patients more flexibility and convenience,” she said.

Donna Lynch, BayCare’s vice president of laboratory, put it in operational terms. “Working with Zipline gives us the opportunity to build a more connected and efficient delivery network across West Central Florida,” she said.

As reported by PR News Wire, the home-delivery piece is where this gets interesting for Florida. The state skews older than almost anywhere in the country, and those patients are the ones refilling chronic prescriptions and running regular lab work, often without an easy way to drive across town for a pickup. Dropping a medication in the backyard removes a car trip a lot of BayCare’s patients can’t easily make.

The argument that wins every “why drones” debate is the same one: speed. Getting medications to a doorstep is a real convenience. Moving an urgent lab sample is life-changing.

When a physician is waiting on a specimen and the courier is stuck in Tampa traffic, a drone that makes the jump in minutes resets the clinical clock.

Zipline brings 135 million autonomous miles to the deal

Zipline is not a startup testing the idea: the company says it has flown more than 135 million autonomous commercial miles and delivered over 20 million items. It now completes one delivery somewhere in the world every 20 seconds and serves more than 5,000 hospitals and health facilities.

The aircraft doing the work is Zipline’s Platform 2, rated to carry up to 8 pounds (3.6 kg). Its service radius runs 10 miles (16 km) out and back, stretching to 24 miles (39 km) when it flies station to station and recharges at the far end. Zipline clocks a 10-mile run in about 10 minutes, with the noise tuned down to something close to rustling leaves.

That FAA approval is the piece that makes this legal at scale. Flying beyond the operator’s line of sight over populated neighborhoods is exactly the operation the agency has spent years gating behind waivers and rulemaking. Zipline is one of the few operators cleared to do it commercially.

Zipline earned that clearance the slow way, logging years of flights under FAA oversight before the agency signed off on routine operations beyond visual line of sight. Most drone-delivery pilots in the US still fly under narrow waivers tied to a single route or campus. Zipline operating across an entire metro is a different category of approval.

Hillary Brendzel, who runs Zipline’s U.S. markets, tied the launch to reach. “We want people to have great experiences with health care wherever they are, from hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and even right at homes,” she said.

When the drones aren’t flying, they’ll sit at two charging stations in Pinellas County, the county that holds both St. Petersburg and Clearwater.

DroneXL’s Take

Let’s be straight, healthcare is the one drone-delivery use case that has always made economic sense, and Zipline is the company that proved it. It built its reputation flying blood and vaccines to clinics across Rwanda and Ghana at national scale, and DroneXL has tracked its US push since Platform 2 was unveiled in 2023.

The reason healthcare works where burrito delivery stalls is margin and urgency. A STAT lab result or a missing medication carries real cost when it’s late, so paying for a drone run pencils out in a way that a taco order never will.

Florida is the perfect proving ground for this. Brutal weather, hurricanes and near-daily summer storms, a large aging population that needs medicine at the door, and a health system with the money to pay for it. Survive a Florida summer and you survive almost anywhere.

There’s a certain symmetry to it, too. Zipline spent years flying the food that clogs arteries. Now it’s flying the medicine that unclogs them. Tidy little business, that.

The technology isn’t the open question here. The calendar is. Late 2027 is far enough out that the FAA’s long-pending BVLOS rulemaking could reshape what operators like Zipline are allowed to do without site-by-site approval. Whether that rule lands before BayCare’s first flight will decide if this network scales on schedule or waits on Washington.
