Welcome to your weekly UAS news update. We have four stories for you this week. A Boston police drone crashes. We have DJI Neo 3 leaks. We also have Wingcopter unveiling a new recon drone. And then lastly, a search and rescue team in Canada is using drones to save a stranded climber. That was awesome. Let’s get to it.
Boston Police Drone Crashes Onto a Parked Car in Brighton
First up, a Boston police drone crashed onto a parked car in Brighton just days after the department launched its new Drone as First Responder program. The crash happened last Thursday around 1:30 p.m. The falling drone landed on a Mazda 3 — they were actually very clear in the article about the Mazda 3, which was kind of weird, but there you go — smashing into the rear windshield and into the trunk, and destroying the aircraft. The owner wasn’t home at the time, and when he came back, he said there was a note on the windshield and then a wrecked car.
Boston Police recently partnered with Motorola Solutions and BRINC in order to bring their new program online, launching it publicly on August 28. The pitch was speed and safety, with drones reaching emergency scenes in as little as one minute. But this crash occurred less than seven days after the program was officially launched.
The Boston Police Patrolmen’s Association was not impressed. Union president Larry Calderone called the program invasive surveillance technology, and they said the department should be hiring more officers instead — which, coming from a union, obviously you would expect them to say that, but still.
Under FAA Part 107, any drone accident causing more than $500 in damage must be reported to the FAA within 10 days. It’s not clear yet if the police department has filed any reports. It’s also unclear if the drone was actually equipped with a parachute recovery system, which would have likely been required for this type of operation.
The DJI Neo 3 Retail Box Leak Reveals a New Controller
Next up, a leaked retail box may have just told us a little bit more about DJI’s plans than DJI actually wanted us to know. The box is for the DJI Neo 3, and it showed up online on September 15. It’s a beginner-friendly drone. We’ve seen the first two versions with fully enclosed propellers and then a gimbal camera.
But the interesting part here is actually the controller. The box is listing a DJI RC Mini, which is a remote that has its own built-in screen, something that we haven’t really seen before. That controller matches a device that has already been approved by the FCC here in the United States, granted back in December 2025. The approval came through just three days before the FCC’s Covered List cutoff blocked any new authorizations for foreign-made drones.
Now, the problem is that the drone itself never got the approval. So without it, the Neo 3 can actually not be sold in the United States. But it’s interesting, because American buyers are going to be able to buy this approved controller and have, well, no approved drone to be able to fly it.
Wingcopter 262 Takes the Delivery Company Into Reconnaissance
Next up, Wingcopter, which is known for delivery drones, just launched something a little bit different — actually, very different. This is the Wingcopter 262, which was unveiled on September 14. It’s a reconnaissance drone. This is a tilt-rotor aircraft that takes off and lands vertically and then flies using a fixed wing horizontally after that.
Wingcopter says that it can stay airborne for up to six hours, which is very much in line for this type of aircraft, fly up to 93 miles, and carry a swappable payload including a thermal camera with 80x zoom on it. It’s built for military and border security customers, as you can imagine, and it’s the first product from Wingcopter’s new division, which is called the Security and Defense division.
Worth noting here, all of these performance numbers come from Wingcopter themselves on their own announcement. There hasn’t been any independent flight testing that we have been able to see. And then there’s no pricing available and no delivery dates either. It’s unclear at this time if future payloads will include anything enterprise, such as LiDAR or mapping cameras, but I guess we’ll keep you posted.
Two Drones and 300 Feet of Rope Save a Stranded Climber
And then finally, some good news. We have a drone that helped save a stranded climber. This was in British Columbia. It happened the night of September 10, at the Stawamus Chief in Squamish. A climber got stuck on a 10-inch ledge, 250 feet up in the air, with no rope left in order to get down.
Squamish Search and Rescue sent up two drones, and one of them lit up the entire cliff face, and then the other flew a pilot line to the climber, who used it in order to pull up a jacket and then a headlamp. Rescuers then used the second drone in order to carry up 300 feet of lightweight rope.
The climber was then able to grab the rope out of the air, tie it to his harness, and then rappel down to safety, to the ground, which was awesome. The team said that it’s two years of training that led to this moment, and it’s a great example, I think, of how far drone-based search and rescue has come, and something that we need to continue doing with affordable drones for these teams.
