City Council forces NYPD to disclose use of drones
The New York City Council passed a bill that when signed by Mayor Bill de Blasio would force the NYPD to disclose their use of drones and other spy technologies in New York City.
Use of drones by NYPD would have to be disclosed
According to an article in the NYT, Mayor Bill de Blasio has already indicated that he will sign the bill that would require the NYPD to disclose the use of drones. The Mayor has previously against the bill but the ongoing ‘Black Lives Matter‘ protests in New York City have changed his mind.
The new bill, known as the Public Oversight of Surveillance Technology — or POST — Act was recently passed by a vote of 44 to 6, despite the NYPD’s continued objection.
The POST Act does not prevent the NYPD from using drones or other spy tech, but it does force the police department to disclose the kind of surveillance tools they use and the types of data are collected.
“This bill is going to be crucial on N.Y.P.D. surveillance,” Albert Fox Cahn, a New York lawyer who runs the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project said. “This is the beginning of the end of a history of abusive policing.”
Thirteen other cities around the country already have similar laws in place.
