Formula 1 fans are not sold on FPV drone footage, and the most detailed public referendum on it is happening on Reddit. After the Austrian Grand Prix put drone shots at the center of a race broadcast, a thread on r/formula1 filled with responses that split between viewers who called the footage the first time they ever felt the cars’ speed and viewers who said it made them physically nauseous. I sit firmly in the first camp, as I wrote from my couch during today’s Hungarian Grand Prix coverage. But I have now read every complaint in that thread, and the critics are not wrong about what they are seeing. They are wrong about what it means.

The twist is that the fix fans kept proposing describes, almost word for word, hardware that already exists and already flew.

The Complaints Cluster Around Physics, Not Taste

The negative reactions in the r/formula1 thread are remarkably consistent, and they describe physics rather than preference. The thread itself was started by a fan sharing DroneXL’s Austrian GP coverage as an explainer for critics, which is how I found it.

The single biggest complaint is the tilted horizon. FPV drones bank to turn, the camera is bolted to the frame with no gimbal, and so the picture leans every time the drone corners. Several commenters reported genuine motion sickness. One wrote that “the tilting made me feel queezy at times.” Others flagged cars sitting off-center in the frame with half the screen showing grass, resolution that cannot match F1’s trackside cameras, and cut timing that made battles harder to follow when the director switched between the drone and standard feeds. A recurring editorial complaint was overuse: fans who enjoyed the angle as a replay tool found it distracting when it carried live wheel-to-wheel fights.

None of this is contrarianism. It is a fair description of what a fixed-camera FPV drone produces when it is kept away from the crowd and the racing line.

An FPV Pilot In The Thread Explained The Invisible Walls

The most valuable comments came from pilots. One FPV pilot, posting as robertgentel, explained that the shots are angled and distant because the drone is not allowed to fly over spectators or cross the live track, and because the pilot’s camera must face forward to fly at all, the same way a driver cannot steer while looking out the side window. Remove those restrictions, he argued, and the footage would be “some of the best ever seen in F1.”

Other commenters worked out the operating envelope themselves. The thread’s original poster estimated from the broadcast replay that the Austrian drone covered roughly 500 meters (1,640 feet) between Turns 4 and 6 in about ten seconds, an average around 180 km/h (112 mph), and pilots chimed in that a drone flying at that pace gets a handful of minutes aloft before a battery swap. Heat and weight tighten the math further. That is why the drone works one section of track instead of chasing a full lap, a constraint I described when the Dutch Drone Gods built the Silverstone chase drone that hit 310 km/h (193 mph) behind Max Verstappen’s RB20.

The Fix Fans Asked For Already Flew At Spa

Buried in the complaints is a feature request, repeated independently across the thread: put two cameras on the drone, one fixed for the pilot and one stabilized and separately operated for the broadcast shot, so the horizon stays level while the drone banks. That is not a fantasy. It is a description of the new version of the Dutch Drone Gods’ rocket drone that debuted at Spa-Francorchamps on July 19, flown by one operator while a second controls a movable camera, as project advisor Taco Ketelaar told Dutch public broadcaster NOS ahead of that race weekend. One week later at the Hungaroring, the coverage added a rotating top-down corner view and a fly-under of a sponsor bridge, shots I broke down in today’s article.

The thread’s comparison to sports car racing cuts the same way. Commenters pointed to WEC drone footage that looks smoother and closer, and the likely reason is that endurance racing’s slower corner speeds allow heavier drones carrying better stabilized cameras. F1’s pace forces the compromise. The technology is closing that gap from both ends: lighter stabilization and faster airframes.

DroneXL’s Take

I love these shots. I said so during the Austrian race, I said so again today, and I have argued for two years that FPV coverage would earn a permanent place in motorsport broadcasting. But the critics in that thread are doing F1 a favor, and pretending otherwise would be cheerleading. Motion sickness is not an opinion. A tilted, off-center frame during a championship battle is a real cost, and the honest defense of the drone program is not that the footage is flawless. It is that the complaints describe engineering problems with known solutions, and the solutions are shipping at the pace of about one upgrade per race weekend.

Here is what I take from reading through that thread: nobody in it argued the perspective itself is worthless. The fight is over execution. That is what adoption looks like. The trackside camera, the onboard, and the gimbaled helicopter lens all went through the same rough public apprenticeship. When the season resumes at the end of August, watch whether the movable-camera drone kills the tilted-horizon complaint. If it does, the loudest thread on r/formula1 will have helped design the camera it was complaining about.
