Mass Drone Sightings Prompt Federal Response Amid Growing Public Concern

Federal authorities are intensifying their response to widespread drone sightings across the northeastern United States, with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas asserting that there’s no evidence of foreign involvement in the incidents. New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced federal plans to deploy advanced drone detection systems across affected areas, following disruptions at Stewart International Airport. The response comes as New Jersey and Connecticut officials report elevated drone sighting numbers since mid-November, including concerning incidents near Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. Army research facility.

The surge in sightings coincides with expanded FAA regulations implemented in September 2023 that permitted nighttime drone operations, complicating the task of distinguishing between authorized and unauthorized flights.
