When a high-profile guest like a US President visits, the security operation is monumental. For Donald Trump’s upcoming state visit to the UK, the Thames Valley Police are adding a powerful new tool to their arsenal: a fleet of DJI Matrice 30T drones.
The drones will serve as the “eyes in the sky” over Windsor Castle, providing a constant, high-definition and thermal overview of the entire event, as BBC told us. It’s a massive and very public vote of confidence in DJI’s professional-grade technology for one of the most demanding security operations imaginable.
A Royal Welcome Under a Robotic Watch
The state visit, scheduled from September 17th to 19th, will see King Charles III and Queen Camilla host President Trump and the First Lady at Windsor Castle. With Buckingham Palace under renovation, Windsor will be the center stage for the ceremonial welcome and a state banquet in St. Georgeโs Hall.
The Thames Valley Police are treating this as a “significant policing operation.” Inspector Matthew Wilkinson, the airspace bronze commander for the event, has announced that a temporary airspace restriction will be in place from September 16th to 18th. This will ban all unauthorized aircraft, including all civilian drones, from the area.
The police force’s own DJI Matrice 30T drones, however, will be very busy. They will be flying patrols, monitoring crowd movements, and providing real-time intelligence to the command center on the ground, ensuring the safety of the royal family, their guests, and the public.
The DJI Matrice 30T: The Perfect Tool for the Job
For a high-stakes security detail like this, you need a serious piece of hardware, and the M30T is a beast. It’s a professional-grade drone designed for exactly this kind of work, and it’s easy to see why the Thames Valley Police chose it.
- Powerful Cameras: The “T” in M30T stands for thermal. Its dual-camera system includes a high-resolution zoom camera and a powerful thermal sensor, allowing operators to spot a potential threat day or night.
- Endurance and Reliability: With a flight time of up to 41 minutes and an IP55 weather-resistance rating, the M30T can handle the often-unpredictable British weather and stay in the air for long periods.
- Secure Live Feed: The drone streams a high-definition video feed back to the operators, allowing for instant situational awareness.
The plan is to have the drones operating in seamless rotation, with one landing for a battery swap as another takes off, ensuring there are no gaps in the aerial surveillance.
A Call for Community Cooperation
A key part of the police strategy is public outreach. Inspector Wilkinson noted that the force has been actively engaging with local drone hobbyists and commercial operators to ensure everyone is aware of the temporary flight restrictions.
This is a smart move. The biggest threat to a smooth operation like this is often not a malicious actor, but a hobbyist who is simply unaware of the TFR. By educating the local community, the police are helping to prevent accidental incursions, which could trigger a major security response. Itโs a powerful reminder to all of us: always check your airspace before you fly.
DroneXLโs Take
It is always fascinating to see our technology take center stage in a major global event. The use of the DJI Matrice 30T to protect a US President and the British Royal Family is a massive testament to the trust and reliability that professional-grade DJI drones have earned with security agencies around the world. Sadly, the same president being protected is the one that’s banning DJI consumer drones from the U.S.
“Real talk,” the pressure on these police pilots will be immense. Flying over a high-profile event, with the eyes of the world watching, is no easy task. You’re dealing with a complex radio environment, unpredictable crowds, and the constant pressure of knowing there is zero room for error. My hat is off to the professionals of the Thames Valley Police for taking on this incredible responsibility.
This is the perfect example of drones being used for good. This isn’t about spying or invading privacy; this is about public safety in its purest form. The drone is a tool that allows the police to do their job more effectively and to keep everyoneโfrom the public to the VIPsโsafer.
This is the kind of professional, responsible drone use that helps build public trust and demonstrates the incredible value of our industry. It’s a powerful story, and it’s one we should all be proud of.

Someone should tell the orange asshole that itโs DJI drones that are protecting him. I know how much he loves DJI.
We already try it. He didn’t listen to us.
