Finally, DJI released update V01.00.0820 that allows you to use the DJI Smart Controller to fly and control your DJI Mavic Air 2 drone.

DJI Smart Controller update for the Mavic Air 2 – V01.00.0820

Yesterday, DJI released update V01.00.0820 for the DJI Smart Controller so that it will now work with the very popular DJI Mavic Air 2. Updating the controller is slight less straightforward than one would like, but luckily Original Dobo made an excellent video explaining the easiest and fastest way to update the , so that you can use it with the Mavic Air 2 and go flying.

The most important tip is to NOT update over the air but use the instead and to make sure that you have enough memory available on the Smart Controller as this update requires 3GB of free space.

What's new with the DJI Smart Controller update?

  • Added support for DJI Mavic Air 2. Under Aircraft Management, Mavic Air 2 can now be added and managed.

Notes:

  • A Smart Controller with a firmware version of v01.00.04.75 or earlier must be updated using DJI Assistant 2.
  • Download the latest DJI Assistant 2, and follow the steps in section in the DJI Smart Controller
  • User Manual. Download DJI Assistant 2 here.
  • Contact DJI Support if the update fails several times. Or better yet watch Ken's video below.

Downloading the data takes about 10-15 minutes, so be patient. Also if you do not have enough memory space available the download will be stuck at 99%, so make sure you free up space or do a factory reset on your DJI Smart Controller.

Benefits of using the DJI Smart Controller

One of the big benefits of using the DJ Smart Controller is that you can use it with different DJI Mavic drones, such as the Phantom 4 Pro V2.0, DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom, but also the Mavic 2 Enterprise. And, of course now the DJI Mavic Air 2. So, for drone pilots with a fleet of drones, having a DJI Smart Controller allows you to control them all and free up your phone.

On the flip side, the DJI Smart Controller is on the expensive side and uses old tech and hardware inside, so keep in mind that we don't know exactly how future proof this device will be.

Here's Ken's video:

  1. Do you think we’ll be able to use goggles for the mavic air 2 in the future because right now we are not able to use them.

  2. Stuck at 99% and my only option is to erase everything and then update it? Either that or it will continuously warn me that the firmware is not up to date must urgently must be updated?
So just like that all my manual waypoint work is gone and I dont even own a mavic air. People dont understand what it takes to get to the actual job site and then this? This a for a job not a play toy for the park and adding a toy drone is what this is all about? So next time there is an update should we all just expect to start over then too?
I should throw the controller in the Detroit river.
