Rep. Van Drew Claims Iranian ‘Mothership’ Behind New Jersey Drone Sightings
Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ) claims that mysterious drones spotted over 新泽西州 originate from an Iranian mothership stationed off the U.S. East Coast, citing unnamed “high-level sources” in a Fox News interview.
Claims Drones of Iranian Origin
Speaking on Fox News’ “Faulkner Focus,” Van Drew, who serves on the House Transportation Committee’s Aviation Subcommittee, asserted that 伊朗 launched a drone-carrying mothership approximately one month ago. The congressman suggested these operations involve technology allegedly acquired through recent deals between Iran and 中国, though he provided no evidence to support these claims.
The assertion comes amid ongoing investigations by the FBI and other agencies into numerous reported drone sightings across New Jersey, with some witnesses describing unmanned aircraft reportedly the size of SUVs operating in groups, often at night.
Technical and Operational Questions
Van Drew’s claims raise significant technical questions about drone capabilities and logistics. While ship-based drone operations are becoming a reality – as demonstrated by Turkey‘s recent breakthrough with the Bayraktar TB3 drone operating from the TCG Anadolu ship – such capabilities require sophisticated infrastructure and extensive testing. The Turkish TB3, with its 46-foot wingspan and advanced maritime adaptations, represents current state-of-the-art technology in naval drone operations, developed openly over several years with documented testing and certification.
Long-range drone operations typically require sophisticated infrastructure for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) control and maintenance. The congressman’s assertion about SUV-sized drones operating clandestinely from a seafaring mothership would represent unprecedented capabilities for Iranian 无人机技术, far beyond currently known operational systems.
Security experts note that sustained drone operations of this scale would require substantial support infrastructure, including refueling capabilities and maintenance facilities. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) maintains strict regulations about drone operations in U.S. airspace, particularly near sensitive locations.
Official Response
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has addressed public concerns, stating there is “no known threat to the public at this time.” Meanwhile, the FBI continues its investigation into the sightings and encourages public reporting of drone activity.
Analysis and Context
While drone incursions represent legitimate security concerns, experts emphasize the importance of verified information. The technical challenges of operating large-scale drone operations from maritime platforms, combined with existing radar and air defense systems along the Eastern seaboard, raise questions about the feasibility of such operations going undetected by military and civilian authorities.
The congressman’s call to “shoot down” these aircraft presents additional complications, as downing unidentified aircraft over populated areas carries significant safety risks. The complexity of drone incident response in civilian areas requires careful coordination between multiple agencies and consideration of public safety.
As investigations continue, authorities maintain established protocols for identifying and responding to unauthorized drone operations while working to verify the source and nature of these reported sightings.

Van Drew mentioned that the Chinese supplied the drone technology. There was a propaganda campaign against people who reported the Chinese spy baloon that was allowed to travel across the country even though it was spotted near Alaska and something could have been done. It could be that negligence (at best) continues. Can a large drone be dropped from a cargo plane? And is it really that difficult to launch a drone from a ship or even from a helicopter lifting it off a ship etc.
If it comes from Fox News it must be true. /s
