DoorDash earned Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration and launched DoorDash Air, its own drone delivery operation, on Wednesday. The certificate makes DoorDash an airline in the FAA’s eyes, with its own aircraft, its own operations manual, and its own liability for every flight it puts in the sky.

DroneXL first wrote about a “DoorDash Air” carousel in November 2022, when the label lived inside the DoorDash app in Logan, Australia and every aircraft behind it belonged to Wing. Four years later the name is unchanged and the aircraft is DoorDash’s own.

The company says it will share aircraft details later this year. It already shared them. The 25-second video DoorDash posted alongside the announcement runs through the DoorDash Labs shop floor, a bench layout of propulsion components, a caged thrust-test rig, and two clean shots of the finished airframe. Anyone who has spent time around drone hardware can read most of what the press release withholds.

The Certificate Alone Does Not Authorize Flights Anywhere

Part 135 makes DoorDash an air carrier. It does not by itself grant permission to fly beyond visual line of sight, and package delivery is impossible without that permission. The FAA’s package delivery guidance states that Part 135 delivery applicants must also obtain an exemption or waiver to conduct BVLOS operations.

Bloomberg reported that the FAA’s own listing shows DoorDash cleared for beyond visual line of sight. Even so, a Part 135 certificate holder cannot operate in a geographic area unless its operations specifications name that area. That is the part nobody covers on announcement day. DoorDash does not have national drone delivery. It has a legal chassis and a stack of location-by-location paperwork ahead of it, exactly like every operator before it.

DoorDash’s announcement describes the five-stage FAA evaluation covering airworthiness, maintenance programs, and safety procedures, and says it is the eighth drone operator in the country to clear it. That count comes from DoorDash, not the FAA. The publicly known holders are Wing, UPS Flight Forward, Amazon Prime Air, Zipline, Causey Aviation Unmanned, which flies Flytrex aircraft, and DroneUp.

In a follow-up post tagging the Department of Transportation and the FAA, DoorDash framed the certificate as authorization to operate as an air carrier and said more on the aircraft is coming later this year.

DoorDash Has Been Selling Drone Delivery For Four Years Already

This is not DoorDash’s entry into drone delivery. It is DoorDash’s entry into owning it. The company has run partner-flown drone operations since 2022, starting in Logan, Australia with Wing, then Charlotte, North Carolina in May 2025, where Wing aircraft cruise at 105 km/h (65 mph) and lower parcels by tether from about 7 m (23 ft).

Flytrex came next. DoorDash and Flytrex launched commercial service in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs in June 2025 after a pilot that cleared more than 1,000 deliveries, a footprint DroneXL covered in April’s analysis of Barclays’ $16 billion drone delivery forecast. Add Atlanta and the company has been running two rival operators in three metros at once.

DoorDash puts the accumulated total at tens of thousands of drone deliveries against more than 10 billion lifetime orders across the whole network. Both figures are the company’s own and neither is independently audited.

The Airframe DoorDash Will Not Describe Is Already On Camera

The launch video shows a red and white fuselage with a molded, sharply pointed nose cone. That is not the flat face of a multirotor shell. It reads as a winged aircraft built to cruise efficiently, with separate lift rotors for vertical takeoff and landing, which is the same architecture Zipline and Wing both settled on for suburban delivery ranges.

A second shot lays out the propulsion hardware on a workbench with a standard DoorDash paper takeout bag placed in the middle of it, which is either a deliberate scale reference or a very lucky accident. The three-blade carbon propellers beside that bag run close to the height of the bag itself. The motors are large-diameter outrunners with stator rings well past consumer camera drone scale. The arms are thick-wall carbon tube with machined aluminum clamps, and the bench supply feeding it all is a rack-style unit rather than a hobby charger.

My read, and it is a read of frame grabs rather than a spec sheet, is that DoorDash Air is a larger aircraft than anything Wing flies commercially today, roughly in the class of Zipline’s, and well short of the size and weight of Amazon’s MK30. DoorDash has published no span, no payload, and no maximum takeoff weight. Treat that estimate as something to correct the moment real numbers land.

The Propulsion Test Rig Is A Serious Piece Of Equipment

Two shots in the video show a motor and propeller mounted on a thrust stand inside a full-height mesh test cage, with a “CAUTION TESTING IN PROGRESS” sign and safety cones staged outside it. A third shot uses smoke to visualize airflow across the rotor hub. The stand carries visible TYTO branding, which points to Tyto Robotics, the Canadian firm whose Flight Stand line is the industry standard for measuring thrust, torque and RPM on everything from small multirotors up to eVTOL propulsion.

Caged whirl testing with smoke flow visualization is not marketing set dressing. It is what you build when you are characterizing a propulsion system you intend to certify, and it is one of the more convincing signals in the whole announcement that DoorDash Labs is doing real aircraft engineering rather than integrating someone else’s airframe and calling it in-house.

Mid-Range Orders Are The Business Case, By DoorDash’s Own Numbers

The pitch is not speed for its own sake. DoorDash says more than 20% of its 2025 orders traveled 5 to 8 km (3 to 5 miles), and those orders took roughly 25% longer than shorter ones because matching a Dasher to a mid-range trip is slow. Drones absorb that band. Dashers keep the dense short runs where they earn faster.

That is a sharp read of where aviation beats a car, and it is the first delivery-drone business case I have seen framed around courier supply rather than customer impatience. DoorDash also claims drone deliveries averaged 25 minutes in 2025 and that some pilot merchant locations saw order volume climb about 30%, sustained across the nine weeks after launch. Every one of those numbers is internal, unaudited, and drawn from a sample the company has not sized.

Harrison Shih, Head of DoorDash Air, framed the ambition plainly: “We want drone delivery to work for any merchant, anywhere.” The aircraft is American-designed and built with a majority of components made domestically, which matters given how the Part 108 proposal treats non-U.S. hardware.

Wing And Flytrex Are Now Suppliers And Competitors At The Same Time

DoorDash says its partnerships with Wing and Flytrex continue. Both companies now supply flights to a marketplace that is building an aircraft to replace them, on a platform whose Autonomous Delivery Platform software decides in real time which mode gets each order. DoorDash writes the dispatch logic and owns one of the options.

Wing has the deepest position to defend. It reaches Walmart shoppers through a 150-store expansion announced in January covering Los Angeles, St. Louis, Cincinnati and Miami, plus its own consumer app and a Papa Johns pilot. Flytrex is narrower and more exposed, with DoorDash volume anchoring its Texas operation.

There is a cautionary case sitting right there. DroneUp holds Part 135 and lost its primary commercial relationship with Walmart anyway. Holding the certificate does not protect you when the customer decides to fly for itself.

The two rivals have also done something DoorDash now benefits from. Flytrex and Wing spent a year coordinating aircraft automatically in shared airspace over Little Elm and Wylie, Texas, logging roughly 8,000 overlapping flights with zero airspace conflicts. That interoperability work is what makes a third carrier over the same suburbs feasible at all.

Eight Air Carrier Certificates In Seven Years Is Not A Framework

The FAA issued its first Part 135 approval for drone cargo carriage in 2019. Seven years later the total sits at eight operators. That is not a regulatory pathway at scale. It is a queue, and the entry fee is a legal department, an aviation safety staff, and the patience to survive a five-stage certification while your competitors ship.

Meanwhile the rule that would fix this is late. Part 108, the framework that would make routine BVLOS flight legal without case-by-case waivers, blew past its February 1, 2026 final-rule deadline set by executive order. The FAA reopened its comment period twice, and by the agency’s own count more than half of roughly 3,100 substantive comments addressed a single unresolved question: which aircraft yields when a drone and a crewed plane share low-altitude airspace. Public safety operators have warned that the same unsettled airspace question puts response drones and delivery fleets on a collision course.

DroneXL’s Take

The certificate is the story everyone will write. The bottleneck is the story that matters.

Eight companies in seven years, each grinding through a bespoke five-stage certification and then negotiating operations specifications geography by geography, is a system that selects for balance sheets rather than aircraft. DoorDash cleared it because DoorDash can afford to staff an airline for years before flying a paying customer. Amazon cleared it for the same reason. A regional operator with a better aircraft and a real safety case does not get through that gate, and the FAA’s missed Part 108 deadline means there is still no other gate to walk through.

I am not against DoorDash here. The hardware in that video is the real thing. You do not build a caged thrust stand with smoke flow visualization to fake a press release, and pairing a purpose-built airframe with the merchant handoff systems is the correct engineering answer to a problem the partner model was never going to solve. If this works, a nurse gets a hot meal at the end of a 12-hour shift and a suburban pizzeria reaches customers three towns over without hiring anyone. That is drones doing exactly what we keep saying they are for.

What bothers me is that the only companies allowed to try are the ones that were already enormous. The FAA has spent seven years proving it can certify air carriers one at a time, and six months failing to finish the rule that would let everyone else compete on merit instead of on legal budget. Protectionism does not have to be written into a statute. A slow enough approval process accomplishes the same thing and nobody has to defend it in public.

I will also say this plainly: telling reporters the aircraft reveal comes later while publishing a video that shows the nose, the rotors, the arms and the test rig is having it both ways. The hardware is out. Give us the span, the payload and the maximum takeoff weight, because those three numbers determine whether DoorDash Air is a Wing competitor or a Zipline competitor, and every operator sharing that airspace has a legitimate interest in the answer.

Two things are worth watching this fall. Whether DoorDash’s first first-party market overlaps a metro where Wing or Flytrex already fly for DoorDash will tell you whether the partnerships are a bridge or a hedge. And the Part 108 docket, which the FAA has now reopened twice, determines whether the ninth Part 135 certificate is a milestone or an obsolete formality.
